Theophile Alexandre Steinlen (November 10, 1859 – December 13, 1923) was a Swiss-born French Art Nouveau painter and printmaker. Steilen often depicted animals, specifically cats, as well as the bohemian cabaret culture of turn-of-the-century Paris. Cats appealed to Steinlen for their charm, movement and character, as well as for their symbolic properties. Theophile Steinlen's 1896 poster is advertising a tour to other cities ("coming soon") of Le Chat Noir's troupe of cabaret entertainers. Le Chat Noir (French for "The Black Cat") was a nineteenth-century entertainment establishment, in the bohemian Montmartre district of Paris. Le Chat Noir is thought to be the first modern cabaret - a nightclub where the patrons sat at tables and drank alcoholic beverages while being entertained by a variety show on stage.
