Vincent Willem van Gogh (March 30, 1853 – July 29, 1890) was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who is among the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In just over a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still life, portraits and self-portraits, and are characterized by bold colors, dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Sunflowers (original title in French: Tournesols) are the subject of two series of still life paintings. The earlier series executed in Paris in 1887 gives the flowers lying on the ground, while the second set executed a year later in Arles shows bouquets of sunflowers in a vase.
